How to celebrate an MOT pass. Fortunately the shopping trip included suitable beverages.
Looks to be OK, and this engine should be swapped out for a rebuilt one in the next couple of months anyway.

Ah, it’s good to give the engine bay a good oil bath every so often

I drove about 20 miles on the highway in my El Camino with the PCV breather out of the valve cover and a funnel stuck in the hole. Realized it when I noticed a burning oil smell.

No, because I know deep down inside that I definitely could have done something so stupid.

Yep.
Gets out of car to investigate rattling sound.
Notices 2 lug bolts missing.
3 are loose.
3 are now torqued to 317 lb-ft
“Don’t worry, honey, car is fine!”

*Fills Willys with 7 quarts 20W50 during an oil change*
Hmm. My feet are wet. Could I have been stupid enough to forget put the oil drain plug back in?
*Sees $65 of oil on the garage floor*
Ah yep. I was stupid enough to forget.

When I was underneath it doing the handbrake cable over the weekend I did add rust treatment to the jobs to be done. Sorted now!

A couple days ago I was driving the lotus and the CEL came on. Right after the Altima, this peaked my anxiety.
I left the gas cap loose

I was tight ening down a drain plug when I noticed it was still dripping oil but the plug was tight. It was then I realized I’d left the plug washer in the pan with all the oil in it but also I’d have to drain all the oil currently in it back out again as I’d have to remove the plug to put the washer on.

Even I have done this. And other dumb things. No one is perfect and mistakes happen to the best of us!

I did the same thing a couple years ago before leaving on a road trip with my wife. Did a quick top off of the oil before going to leave, hopped in the car, then told myself the nagging feeling that I had forgotten something was just OCD. 25 minutes later I thought I maybe smelled oil, but everything was indicating ok so I figured it was the truck in front of me. 35 minutes later shortly after merging onto the highway I hit a pothole and saw something bounce from under my car and roll into the weeds. I knew immediately what it was.
Pulled over and did a search for the cap, which came up empty after 15 minutes. Thankfully there was an autozone right off the next exit that had a new cap in stock, and very little oil seemed to have sloshed out. I’ll definitely pull over right away the next time I have one of those nagging feelings...

Years ago I once accidentally didn’t notice that the oil filter I had replaced left behind its old gasket. Double gasket is no bueno.
The moment I turned over the engine after “completing” the job, oil started gushing out of the top of the filter.
Apparently a double gasket oil filter won’t leak on it’s own but it sure will under any pressure.
Thankfully I noticed immediately and shut it down and started over. The 5.9 in that Jeep was pretty bullet proof though so it probably would have been fine if I hadn't seen it immediately. Ha

I did this on a track day for an entire session in my Focus RS... The hood insulation took me ages to clean, it had a full quart of oil soaked into it. Thankfully no further damage, but geez...
I felt slightly better that my instructor had done the exact same thing in his S2000 earlier in the summer, haha
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

Been there done that. On what I would call my “learning car”
Learned to drive manual, learned to drive fast, learned to clean and learned to maintain.
RIP that car.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Rebuilt, sort of, the front of my Rabbit pickup. Forgot to secure the oil cooler and the alternator belt rubbed a hole through the oil line and f ucked up all of lifters...

I did that on my old Acclaim’s 1st oil change after dropping the built motor in.
Was doing other things while doing an oil change, finished the other things after filling the oil, took off on a beat run only to be greeted by the smell of burning oil a mile later. Babied it home, topped off the oil again, found the cap laying neatly in the driver’s side behind the headlight. Installed the cap, pressure washed the engine bay, then finished the beat run.
Only lost about 1 qt total, so no harm done, but I now have a religious oil change checklist.

Puts crank 180* out from camshafts, hits key, engine starts and runs terribly.......
Finds out Chrysler 6G72s will run 180* out.........not well, but they will run.

I once disconnected the AC pump on the Range Rover in an effort to save fuel whilst touring around out in the desert. Then I realised that the steering had become extremely difficult to operate...
